Transportation Assistance Program
Some of the individuals that find themselves unemployed and/or homeless do have available to them adequate shelter or employment. The barrier to accessing either can be simply a matter of too many miles between here and that housing or employment opportunity, and no financial means to make the necessary trip. The TAP responds to this need by providing transportation vouchers for individuals that have verified housing or employment in another location.
The Transportation Assistance Program (TAP) is a program of the County of Humboldt Department of Health and Human Services (HCDHHS). North Coast Resource Center (NCRC) has contracted with the County to provide this service to clients of NCRC.
TAP was first established in 2006. North Coast Resource Center remains the only partner with the County of Humboldt contracted to administer this program.
The Program
Any low-income individual that has secured either shelter or employment in a location outside of Humboldt County may apply by meeting with a North Coast Resource Center Case Manager. The Case Manager will verify that accommodations or employment are available to the applicant. Verification can be as simple as a phone call to the friend or family member offering shelter, or to an employer offering a job.Once shelter or employment opportunities have been verified by the NCRC Case Manager, an appointment is made with HCDHHS. Applicants are assisted with means for transportation to that appointment to complete the transaction.
Once a representative of HCDHHS has verified a shelter or employment opportunity, applicant individuals are provided with a voucher for transportation to that location where they have shelter or employment waiting.
Successful applicants are escorted to the bus terminal and onto a bus to their intended destination. For trips of any duration accommodations for meals while traveling are provided as well. Within a few days of their expected arrival at their destination the NCRC Case Manager will call to verify the applicant has reached their intended destination safely.
Fees
There are no fees charged for any aspect of this service.
